Imagine a sports tournament where the athletes played in heavy armour and were allowed to use fists, sticks and stones as weapons. The tournament would be extremely dangerous and injuries would be expected. This may sound far from modern sports tournaments but this was exactly what sports used to be like. Sports have changed over time. In the past sports had very few rules and safety measures whereas today sports are much safer with strict rules about safety equipment and procedures for competitions. Sports have also changed by making sports more competitive through new technology such as social media, television advertising and endorsements which allows sportspeople to become well known celebrities who can earn huge incomes from prize money and endorsements.

American sports such as American football, boxing and baseball were very different sports when they began compared to the sports they are today.

The following sentence is an example of a neutral statement:

Today’s sports have many rules and safety measures that sports from the past did not have.

The word ‘rules’ in this sentence seems positive whereas in a context where a person was arguing about their opinion on contemporary sporting events it would seem negative. Also, the word ‘safety’ could be interpreted differently depending on personal opinions. For example, some people may think it is safe while others may think it is dangerous. Furthermore, one should also take into account the comparison with sports from the past which suggests that sports today are more safe due to having more rules. This suggests that sports are more controlled today than they were in the past, which is another statement that would hold different opinions depending on personal perspectives.

The following sentences are both examples of biased statements:

Today’s sports are more competitive through better technology. Many sportspeople can earn huge incomes from prize money and endorsements due to television advertising, social media and good relationships with sponsors.

Sports have evolved over time where sportspeople can now make a lot of money because sports are more competitive with many sportspeople becoming celebrities receiving large paycheques from commercial sources such as sponsorships and endorsements while also receiving prize money for winning competitions. Sport has become much bigger business since these changes have occurred.

Sport has changed dramatically allowing people to earn huge incomes from prize money and endorsements. sportspeople can now become celebrity, receiving large paycheques from commercial sources such as television advertising and sponsorships while also gaining popularity through social media.

The first example uses a very vague statement, ‘Sports have changed over time’. It does not give any context to which sports or how they have changed. The second example gives a lot more detail about the changes that sports have been subject to but still lacks specific examples of sportspeople who receive high salaries from sponsorship deals etc. The use of terminology such as ‘evolve’, ‘dramatic’ and ‘business’ immediately suggests that this is an opinion rather than a fact. In both examples sports are presented as being more controlled today whereas in the second example sportspeople are presented as being less controlled by sponsors etc. The first statement suggests that sports are now more competitive whereas the second statement suggests that sports are now less competitive with people gaining large salaries from commercial sources instead of winning competitions.

Finally, one should note that there is a difference between sports having changed over time and sports changing over time. The word ‘over’ infers great distance in time or space while the word ‘through’ implies an ongoing process which has its roots in the past but not necessarily any specific amount of time hence sports have changed through evolving with new technology

for example. Sports have evolved over time meaning they have changed gradually However, sports change through evolving with new technology for example suggesting that sports change almost immediately.

Comparison of old sports with today’s sports.
