Corona is a disease that has been floating around the world ever since it first made its debut in Europe about 500 years ago.

Over time corneas have become one of the tissues most affected by corona leading to corneal transplants being among the most common surgeries performed today.

Coronavirus C-B1/TW/HKU3 was isolated from specimens taken from corneal transplant recipients in Hong Kong who were suffering with delayed cornea graft rejection.[1] This coronavirus has not yet been deposited into any type of culture collection therefore it is unknown how it was first isolated.

C-B1 corona virus is similar to corona virus subtype 2(CoV) seen in the early 60’s. CoV subtype 2 is responsible for about 80% of corona cases worldwide and can lead to cornea transplants as well as AIDS.[2] C-B1 has not yet shown any infectious capabilities with its closest relative being CoV 2. There are five coronavirus groups with two distinct genotypes.[3] Groups 1,2,3 and 4 belong to genotype A while group 5 belongs to genotype B. Group 1 corona viruses are now known as human corona viruses (hCoV), with hCoV 229E belonging to group 2 corona virus. hCoV 229E is closely related to CoV subtype 2 and has been isolated from corneal transplant recipients in Denmark, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States.[3]
