The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) – USC Chapter emerged as champions in the recently concluded Annual Accounting Quiz Bowl held at the Ayala Activity Center on July 18, 2016, from 1 to 6 p.m.
The Annual Accounting Quiz Bowl—one of the highlights of the Cebu Federation (CF) Accountancy Week—is an academic tournament organized by the CF JPIA officers to foster academic excellence and learning among CF member schools. The quiz bowl is separated into two levels, each having an easy, average and difficult round. The levels cover a share of different accounting topics such as partnership and corporation accounting, financial accounting and reporting, auditing, taxation and management advisory and control.
This year, juniors Diether Cala and Kirk Saromines have been chosen to represent USC – JPIA for the first level competition. They placed first out of the several colleges and universities who participated in the event. Following them were teams from the Cebu Institute of Technology – University and the University of Cebu – Banilad Campus, placing second and third place respectively.
A playful and exhilarating game, as the audience would describe it, the first level was not always in USC’s favor. Rather, the team began to rise from fourth to second rank during the latter part of the competition.
According to Saromines, they were not expecting to win because they did not get a score for the average round. “It was a good thing that we were able to answer during the easy and difficult rounds,” Cala said.
Meanwhile, fourth-year students Miguel Taveros and Irish Kabingue, together with fifth-year students Vianca Amores, Jessa Bermudo and Marianito Jesus del Rio, were teamed for the extensive and comprehensive second level competition. The team also placed first among other competing schools. Closely competing with USC were teams from the University of Cebu – Main Campus and the University of San Jose – Recoletos, placing second and third ranks respectively.
The Annual Accounting Quiz Bowl is one of the several activities organized by the CF JPIA officers and will last from July 17 to July 23, 2016.
