The Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) and the Office of Research of USC held a seminar-workshop on intellectual property (IP) strategy in technology commercialization in the Josef Baumgartner-Learning Resource Center at the Talamban Campus last Aug. 25 to 26,2016.
The two-day activity expounded on commercialization of technology through a series of topics lectured by Atty. Anna Mariae Celeste Jumadla, an expert in the respective field, which brought about many professionals both from and outside the university.
The lecture began with how to turn technologies into businesses by doing a human-centered approach in which one creates a value for customers to be able to understand their needs so to create ideas for solutions, build a prototype to present ideas and finally, test them if they truly suffice customers’ needs.
Included in the lecture was the business model, which according to the presentation, rationalizes on how an organization creates, delivers and captures the value in a business. Its nine building blocks are: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships and cost structure, which are useful for commercializing technologies to the market.
It was then discussed how IP may serve as a driver for commercialization of technologies by protecting it through patents and whether or not these technologies can be patented according to the set requirements in the field. It was also explained how that system is managed for business competitiveness because it gives temporary monopoly, and to keep serving the market their needs.
The last topic talked about the patent prosecution strategies that may be applied to biotechnology, pharmaceutical, chemical and chemistry-related inventions.
During the lecture, the participants of the seminar-workshop were given activities to understand more what has been discussed.
Finally, open forums were initiated to conclude each day and the entire intellectual property lecture series.
